The Perfect Room: Mid Century Flawless in Sydney
The living room in this Sydney home has me swooning. The way it mixes modern and vintage is unique. The home and its materials are true modern, designed by Harry Seidler in 1972. The stones on the wall and the ground give the room a clean feel.
His large windows let the surrounding lush greenery through, creating a timeless backdrop for the perfect room. He warms the room up with a large Persian rug, instantly giving the room history and character. With such a bold and beautiful red anchoring the room, Seidler chose a simple black and white color palette, but he plays with textures to keep you interested. He designed the shiny glass coffee table himself which reflects the large amount of light coming in, beautifully. The soft B&B Italia Slab Sofa is inviting and rich in black leather. Opposite in matching black leather is a structured pair of the famous mid century, Marcel Breuer Wassily Lounge Chairs.
Two vintage Saarinen Tulip Tables are the perfect accent. Especially the larger wood topped one surrounded by mid century Warren Platner armchairs, that I've always coveted. The dark purple their upholstered in is the perfect complimentary color to the deep red. Finally, the white modern chaise lounge is a perfect way to get extra seating while keeping the lines of the room open.
When a room has such a cool base, it's important to warm it up with accessories so it still feels homey and inviting. In this room the sheepskin, draped on the couch definitely helps. It's the wood though that really transforms the room with warmth. The different wood grains, on the ceiling, the walls and storage units deliver a room that is rich in materials.
This perfect room comes together with amazing materials, vintage mid century furniture and accents and is edited beautifully when it comes to accents. my personal favorite though, the black Eames bird on it's perch above the fireplace.
